Yes, I'm from Ball State and I'm Looking for Men 18 and Over... to Take a Survey

by Samantha

One of our goals is to increase our male-to-female ratio, a noble goal if you will. In order to accomplish this goal we must only survey men because we already know women are more likely to answer the phone and complete the survey. This makes getting to the men even harder than normal. Once you have a participant on the phone, you can try your best to captivate them and reel them in to take the survey. However, asking to speak to men means explaining why you don't want to hear what the woman has to say about healthcare. Here's how some of it went for me:

Sometimes they act as secretaries...
One female said, "Honey, are you available?" and I heard a man reply, "No, I'm not available," and she politely relayed the message to me. Maybe they will say, "No, I don't think he would want to do that."
What the heck, lady? I'm not his mother-in-law. It's a five-minute poll with no wrong answers!

Sometimes there are no men in the household. "I don't have a man and I don't want a man."
How can you not laugh at such a simple blatant truth?

Sometimes the problem is just the opposite. "All I have around here are a bunch of men!"
I've heard of worse problems.
